  "On 11 Apr 1663 Thomas Mapes bought extensive lands at Southold including a home lot and dwelling house. Thomas was the surveyor for the town of Southold and apparently was well educated when he arrived. There is no record of when he arrived in this country but he appeared in Southold about 1640"
